Odigìtria Monastery

Date 17/05/2019

Calm, quiet and meditation!

We didn't really have in mind to visit it as our first intention was to go to the beach of Agiofaraggo, but being on our way, we had to stop and visit this place full of history. The monastery of Odigitria is located in the heart of the Asterousia mountain range and dominates a wild and arid mountain range. A great number of ascetics, known and unknown, have forged the history of this place. I invite you to read this very complete article written by the association Alsace-Crète (in French) if you want to know more.

The place is very quiet. In fact, only the bells and the sheep disturb the inhabitants. The cats have taken up residence here, and there is a great sense of tranquility.

In the centre of the enclosure you will find a two-aisled church, dedicated to the Virgin and the Holy Apostles, which we did not visit.

This place was historically the seat and refuge of the rebels. A fortified tower called Xopateras is a remnant of this.

It was built to protect the monks from pirates coming from the southern sea.

Inside the monastery you will also find a museum, an old olive press, an old stone oven and other utensils used by the monks in the past.

We take advantage of our passage through this monastery to explore the surroundings. A few steps away, we find a small chapel, very pretty by the way.

The rest of our visit continues towards the beach of Agiofarago, follow the guide!
